Imposter Syndrome vs. The Dunning-Kruger Effect
Imposter Syndrome is a psychological pattern where individuals doubt their accomplishments and have a persistent, often irrational, fear of being exposed as a fraud despite evidence of their competence. It's characterized by a deep-seated belief that one's successes are due to luck or external factors, rather than their own abilities.
Whereas the Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias where people with limited knowledge or skill in a particular area overestimate their abilities. Conversely, those with high competence may underestimate their expertise. This occurs because individuals lacking knowledge may not be able to accurately assess their own shortcomings.
